Congressman Gonzalez Brings Back Bill To Bring Back Deported Vets

McAllen Congressman Vicente Gonzalez is re-introducing legislation that would give deported military veterans a pathway to U.S. citizenship.

The Repatriate Our Patriots Act was introduced by Gonzalez last session but it was blocked by the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. With a Democrat now in charge of the committee, Gonzalez is reviving the bill saying it’ll have a better chance of getting through the House. The measure would allow veterans who were honorably discharged but later deported to their home countries to begin the naturalization process from there.

Gonzalez says the bill is meant for veterans who, for instance, suffer from PTSD and who were arrested for non-violent crimes related to alcohol or drug use. Gonzalez’s legislation is co-sponsored by Republican Alaska Representative Don Young.
