A former employee in the Starr County Treasurer’s Office has been freed on a personal recognizance bond after being arrested amid indications she stole at least $8,000 from department accounts. 37-year-old Aracely Salinas is charged with theft by a public servant. She was arrested Friday, a little less than two weeks after she was fired.
According to District Attorney Omar Escobar, it was the county auditor’s office that first spotted financial discrepancies. A follow-up criminal investigation found that receipts for cash transactions given by the treasurer’s office didn’t match bank deposit stubs. Salinas was the employee who both provided the receipts and deposited the cash.
Authorities say the discrepancies date back to the middle of last year, and that they are still investigating.
