Demoted has now been suspended from the department amid allegations of “illegalities.” That’s according to an audit committee report, which says Elizondo re-routed emergency calls to a non-permitted private ambulance company.
The audit report states Elizondo, for a 10-month period while he was fire chief, re-routed 78 emergency calls to the company Intercity Ambulance for Emergency Medical Transport. The audit says the city of Brownsville lost more than 60-thousand dollars in revenue as a result.
The audit committee was formed in July after allegations arose that the ambulance company was operating without the proper permits. Elizondo, who was named fire chief in May of last year, was demoted to fire lieutenant last month.
