Harlingen Nursing Home Patient Dies From COVID-19, First In Cameron County


A second Rio Grande Valley resident has died from the disease caused by the coronavirus. Cameron County Public Health confirms the patient was an 81-year-old resident of the Veranda nursing home in Harlingen.

The individual had been hospitalized at Valley Baptist Medical Center for an unknown period of time, although the first confirmation of a coronavirus outbreak at the Veranda Rehabilitation and Healthcare facility came on March 31st.  Since then, 11 other residents and 11 employees have tested positive for the highly-contagious virus. The COVID-19-related death reported Monday is the first in Cameron County and the second in the Valley. It follows the death of a Willacy County man in his 60’s on Saturday
