Harlingen To House COVID-19 Patient Recovery Facility To Take Load Off Hospitals

An alternate COVID-19 care facility being prepared to free up much-needed hospital space could be ready to take patients by the end of the week.

The so-called step-down facility is being set up inside Casa de Amistad conference center in Harlingen. The temporary facility is being provided by the state to be used for COVID-19 patients who no longer need to be treated in the hospital but who aren’t well enough to go home.

Hospitals in Cameron County, along with those throughout the Valley, have been overwhelmed by a surge of COVID-19 patients, which began shortly after the Memorial Day holiday, but which exploded further after the Fourth of July.
