A Rio Grande Valley nun is getting the opportunity of a lifetime. Sister Norma Pimentel, who heads Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, will be meeting with Pope Francis during his visit to the U-S later this month.
Pimentel is to visit the White House when the Pope meets with President Obama. She will then be with other Catholic Charities directors at a mass with the Pope in Washington D-C. Two days later, Pimentel will be one of three people to tour an immigration facility with Pope Francis in New York City.
Pimentel has gained national recognition for her efforts coordinating the humanitarian relief provided at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen to the thousands of mostly Central American immigrants who poured across the border into the Valley last spring and summer.
