A new Census response survey shows Texas ranking 41st in nationwide Census participation – and the Rio Grande Valley ranks even lower. According to the Texas Demographic Center, 54.2% of Texans have filled out their 2020 Census forms.
In the Valley, only 41.7% of households in Hidalgo County have done so and 41.2% of Cameron County households have responded. Starr County had a 31.1% Census participation rate, while a dismal 26.4% of households in Willacy County have responded to the Census questionnaire.
Local officials are urging a much higher response rate saying it’ll mean greater representation in Congress, and it will qualify the region for a larger amount of federal dollars for transportation, healthcare, and education improvements. You can fill the 2020 Census online at 2020census.gov. You have until October 3rd.
