A San Benito man about to go on trial for the murder of his school teacher wife has admitted to the crime. 39-year-old Alvaro Mata pleaded guilty Tuesday to killing his wife as jury selection was about to get underway.
It was early the morning of November 14th 2017 when, police said, Mata grabbed a gun during a domestic dispute, chased his wife into a bedroom, and opened fire. 36-year-old Jessica Cortina was struck in the chest and killed. Mata fled the house but was apprehended hours later.
Mata is facing a maximum prison sentence of 99 years, but as part of the plea, prosecutors are recommending up to 50 years.
