Suspended Brownsville Schools Superintendent Resigns

A little more than a month after suspending her, the Brownsville school board has accepted the resignation of Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas.

The Brownsville Herald reports the resignation was agreed to late Tuesday night during an hours-long closed-door meeting. Neither the school district nor Zendejas are talking about what led to her resignation, but Zendejas had been placed on administrative leave with pay January 11th amid a reported investigation concerning facilities projects.

Zendejas had been superintendent of Brownsville schools for the past 3-1/2 years. It was her second stint as superintendent after having led the district for three years in the early to mid 90’s. Education consultant Sylvia Hatton has been overseeing the school district since Zendejas’ suspension.
