Willacy County Man Becomes First Valley Resident To Die From Coronavirus


The Rio Grande Valley is dealing with the first death of a Valley resident from the coronavirus.

A Willacy County man in his 60’s died Saturday at a hospital. His death came 6 days after test results came back showing he had contracted COVID-19. State health officials are not saying which city the patient was from nor at which hospital he was being treated.

The first coronavirus-related death in the Valley comes 17 days after the first Valley case of coronavirus was confirmed. In those past 2-1/2 weeks, the number of Valley residents testing positive for COVID-19 has grown to 198. There are 99 cases in Hidalgo County, 87 in Cameron County, 7 in Starr County, and 5 in Willacy County.
