The first coronavirus case has been confirmed in Willacy County, and the patient is a child.
County officials announced Thursday afternoon that a 4-year-old child who attends Pittman Elementary School tested positive for COVID-19. It is not yet known how the child contracted the virus. Health officials are now working to find everyone who had come in contact with the child over the past two weeks and make sure they get tested and are isolated.
Also Thursday, Willacy County Judge Aurelio Guerra implemented a stay at home order. The order is similar to those already in place in Cameron, Starr, and Hidalgo counties, and will require Willacy County residents to stay inside and for businesses to close. But also like the other orders, it contains exemptions for people, businesses, and travel deemed essential. The stay at home order takes effect at 11:01 p.m. tonight and will be in effect for two weeks.
