The Houston ISD says more than 400 teachers won’t return to the classroom in the upcoming school year. The district hires teachers who are working towards their teaching certification, but they’re given two years to get it done.
A district spokesperson says 406 teachers failed to do so. Of that number, 84 showed proficiency and will stay on as teacher apprentices. The other 322 are out of a job because they didn’t show enough progress toward certification within the two-year time limit.
