The Mercedes school district will close two elementary schools at the end of the school year. The Mercedes ISD Board of Trustees approved a consolidation plan for the district during a meeting Tuesday.
The district will close Zachary Taylor and John F. Kennedy elementary schools, while turning Harrell Middle School into an elementary school.
Supporters of the plan said the district needs to deal with declining enrollment, while opponents said the board could have done more to keep the schools open.
