Several new laws passed in this year’s Texas legislative session will take on the state’s water supply crisis.

The Texas water supply is threatened by aging infrastructure, a booming population, and severe droughts. One new law requires large water utilities to detect and repair leaks that can lead to the loss of millions of gallons of water.

Another law bars homeowners’ associations from punishing residents whose lawns aren’t green enough. All told, the new laws add up to an investment of 20 billion dollars in water projects over the next 20 years.
