Harris County Commissioners Court is diverting funds from a universal basic income program to other county priorities.

Commissioners voted 3-1 on Thursday to redirect nearly 20 million dollars in federal pandemic funds that had been earmarked for Uplift Harris. The 2023 program promised 500 dollars a month for 18 months to more than 19-hundred low-income households.

The state sued, calling the program unconstitutional. The funds will instead be used for rental assistance, homeless initiatives, and food insecurity.
