Protesters had to be evacuated from the Texas capitol building after a shooting threat. The protesters had gathered Tuesday in Austin to support Democratic lawmaker Nicole Collier, who spent the night in the building as part of an effort to stop Republican redistricting.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says the evacuation was triggered around 6:30pm after someone on social media called on protesters to “take action by shooting and killing” those at the capitol who won’t let Democrats leave without a police escort.
Texas Democrats fled the state earlier this month to keep Republicans from redrawing state congressional maps that would see the GOP gain seats.
