A federal lawsuit has been filed challenging a new congressional map approved by the Texas Senate.
According to the Texas Tribune, the plaintiffs are alleging that the new map, which is expected to give the GOP five more seats in the U.S. House, was drawn in a way that is racially discriminatory. They also claim redrawing congressional districts mid-decade is unconstitutional.
The map was adopted early Sunday morning on a party line vote over staunch Democratic opposition that accused Republicans of gerrymandering. Texas Governor Gregg Abbott had indicated he plans to quickly sign the legislation into law.
