A Hidalgo County judge is considering a mistrial for a defendant accused of a deadly shooting in 2020. Defense attorneys requested a mistrial for 23-year-old Carlos Juilan Contreras earlier this week.
Investigators believe Contreras shot and killed 18-year-old Genaro “Izzy” Castillo, who was found dead near Donna Lake more than five years ago. The defendant’s attorneys say prosecutors failed to disclose an immunity agreement offered to a witness before the trial began.
