Authorities say a former Hidalgo County detention officer accused of smuggling drugs into the facility was working with a teenage inmate charged with murder.
Investigators said Ronaldo Rodriguez would leave a clear bag of drugs concealed in toilet paper rolls at the holding cells to be picked up and distributed by Mauricio Mata.
Mata is accused of fatally shooting 44-year-old David Silva in February 2023 when he was 15 years old. Rodriguez was released from jail earlier this week on a five-thousand-dollar bond.
