Some Central Texas sheriffs are getting involved in immigration enforcement sooner than required. A new state law will require sheriffs across Texas to train some deputies to work with federal immigration officials.

Senate Bill 8 takes effect next year and doesn’t require counties to join the program until December 2026. But the sheriffs of Williamson, Bastrop and Caldwell Counties have already signed new agreements with federal immigration officials. Burnet County has had an agreement in effect since 2019.
