Senator Ted Cruz is asking for his salary to be withheld during the government shutdown. On Wednesday, Cruz posted a letter he sent to the financial clerk of the Senate, asking for his salary check to be held “for the duration of the current lapse in appropriations.”

Cruz went on to say it isn’t right for lawmakers to be paid during a shutdown if service members aren’t. The government shut down just after midnight Wednesday after funding proposals from both parties were voted down in the Senate.
