We’re now in Day 2 of a partial government shutdown and the head of the Office of Management and Budget says the mass firing of federal workers is expected to begin in “a day or two.”

OMB chief Russ Vought reportedly made that comment Wednesday in a private call to House Republicans, and called it “a mass reduction in force.” Vought apparently warned that money is about to run out for active-duty members of the military and for the WIC program for low-income mothers and babies.

House Democrats are calling the mass layoffs a negotiating tactic, and claim Republicans will keep firing workers whether there’s a shutdown or not.
