An immigration rights group is stepping up to help a Houston mother whose autistic son was placed in federal immigration custody.
Maria Gonzalez Garcia’s son, 15-year-old Emmanuel Gonzalez Garcia went missing over a week ago after he wandered away from her while she was selling fruit on the street.
FIEL Houston reports that his mother was later notified by Houston Police that he was found in an immigration facility. FIEL says because Maria Gonzalez Garcia is not a U.S. citizen, she can’t reclaim her son, but instead must find a U.S. sponsor to claim him. FIEL plans to raise questions during Tuesday’s Houston City Hall meeting.
