Texas lawmakers are telling universities they’ll have to balance free speech on campus with the responsibility to maintain civil discourse.

The Senate and House Select Committee on Civil Discourse and Freedom of Speech in Higher Education met Thursday in Austin. At issue were recent student reactions to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as well as pro-Hamas demonstrations at U-T last year in which several students were arrested. The committee heard testimony from nearly a dozen invited witnesses.
