Governor Abbott says a new South Texas facility will help eradicate a potential threat to Texas livestock. The governor was in Raymondville Thursday discussing the potential threat that the New World screwworm poses for farms and ranches.
The parasite has been detected in areas of Mexico closer to the Texas border, and state and national leaders have proposed several ideas to stop the pest from advancing.
Abbott says a 750-million-dollar facility in Edinburg that would produce sterile flies is a key portion of that strategy. The governor is also creating a task force that will work with state and federal agencies to help tackle the problem.
