Millions of Texans receiving food stamps will face new restrictions on the usage of their benefits starting next week.

Governor Greg Abbott signed a new state law last year that bars the use of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for purchasing sweetened beverages and candy.

Senate Bill 379 was one of three Texas bills under the “Make America Healthy Again” initiative. The bill was passed with bipartisan support, but some Democratic legislators had some concerns over its possible long-term effects.
