The capital murder trial of the man accused of killing seven-year-old Athena Strand starts Tuesday.
Tanner Horner is charged with abducting and strangling the girl at her family’s Wise County home in December 2022. Investigators say he accidentally hit the girl with his FedEx truck while delivering a package to her home. She survived, but Horner reportedly admitted he panicked and kidnapped the girl, and later killed her.
The state is seeking the death penalty. The trial was moved from Wise County to Tarrant County in a change of venue.
