The Brownsville school board has placed Superintendent Jesus Chavez on administrative leave. The board approved the move in a 5-2 vote early yesterday.

Chavez had already announced that he would not renew his contract at the end of the current school year.

Speaking after the vote, he thanked school district employees and community members for working with him during his two-and-a-half years leading the district. Alma Benevidez will serve as interim superintendent for the district.
