The Texas Department of Insurance is encouraging Houston-area homeowners to buy flood insurance before hurricane season starts on June 1st. The agency advises that flood insurance policies usually only take effect after 30 days.

The National Flood Insurance Program says about 40 percent of flood insurance claims come from homes and businesses that aren’t in designated flood zones. More than 200 thousand homes in Harris County were flooded during Hurricane Harvey, many of which weren’t covered by flood insurance.
