South Texas animal shelters are encountering problems now that the New World screwworm has crossed the border into the U.S. Shelters that normally transfer animals to other states to help prevent overcrowding are now finding that path blocked.
A representative of the Palm Valley Animal Society says some states are refusing to accept any animals from Texas, while others are insisting on additional medical examinations.
The shelter is screening all animals for screwworm and must report any infections discovered to the Texas Animal Health Commission.
