A former Brazoria County deputy is out on bond following his arrest for the fatal shooting of a Texas State University student in Lake Jackson.

A Brazoria County grand jury indicted Kevin Tippit last week for aggravated assault by a public servant. The Texas Rangers arrested Tippit on Tuesday morning, and he bonded out that afternoon.

Tippit reportedly shot 18-year-old John Mendoza Jr. on June 1st after following the teen into his father’s garage after an attempted traffic stop. Tippit said at the time that the shooting was accidental.
