The state’s first higher education ombudsman will head a newly created office to investigate complaints against Texas colleges and universities. Governor Greg Abbott appointed Brandon Simmons to the position on Thursday.

Simmons will investigate complaints that universities and colleges aren’t following the state’s ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs, and will recommend funding cuts for violators. Simmons said Thursday he will step down from Texas Southern University’s Board of Regents to accept the new position.
