President Biden is calling Pope Francis’ historic visit to Iraq a “symbol of hope for the entire world.” Biden says the papal visit demonstrates hope is more powerful than death and peace is more powerful than war.

Biden congratulated the Pope and the government of Iraq for planning such a “monumental visit.” Pope Francis landed in Iraq on Friday, marking the first-ever papal visit to the country.

The purpose of the visit was for Francis to offer encouragement to Iraq’s Christian population which has faced hostile treatment by the Islamic State group. The Pope toured four cities, including Mosul, telling Iraqis that the country would “always remain with me, in my heart.”
