U.S. Customs and Border Protection is planning two new Border Patrol checkpoints near Roma.

A statement from the agency says the new Starr County checkpoints will help discourage illegal border crossing and contraband smuggling.

Monday’s statement did not give an exact location for the checkpoints or a date for opening.
