Cameron County’s sheriff says an inmate found dead in his cell last week was not on suicide watch. Joel Uriegas Izaguirre had been accused of killing his wife and her aunt after they died in December.

Sheriff Manuel Trevino says Izaguirre was placed in a single cell for his own safety and was being checked on every 30 minutes.

A report filed with the Texas Attorney General’s Office indicates Izaguirre made suicidal statements before his death. The Texas Rangers are investigating the case.
