Competency Exam Ordered For Man Charged In Alamo Killing

A judge has ordered a mental competency exam for a San Juan man accused of killing a woman at a retail plaza in Alamo. 28-year-old Larry Charles Culbert is charged with murder in the throat-slashing death of 47-year-old Andrea Socorro Reyna.

Culbert stabbed himself in the neck after the attack but survived. It happened in the parking lot of an Alamo shopping center March 25th. The McAllen Monitor reports Culbert’s attorney told the judge he couldn’t ensure that Culbert is competent due to medication he says impedes his ability to understand court proceedings. Culbert remains jailed without bond.
