Construction is underway on a new facility aimed at spotlighting the Lower Valley as one of the nation’s top ecotourism destinations. Ground has been broken on the South Texas Ecotourism Center in Laguna Vista – an indoor/outdoor facility to promote environmental education and draw more ecotourists to the region.

Outdoors, visitors can enjoy nature trails, native habitat, birdwatching overlooks, and an environmental education amphitheater. The indoor component consists of a nature center, exhibit space, and classrooms and multipurpose rooms.

The $9 million project was funded by voter-approved increases in the county’s hotel-motel tax and auto rental tax, as well as through grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Ecotourism Center is scheduled to open its doors next summer.
