Cortez Says No Immediate Decision On Reopening Bars

Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez says he will take a cautious approach before deciding whether to allow bars and nightclubs to reopen, as is being allowed by Governor Greg Abbott.

Cortez says he won’t make a decision until he consults with the county’s top two health officials, as well as with all of the mayors. Abbott’s order allows county judges to opt in to reopening bars to 50 percent occupancy.

The Rio Grande Valley is no longer considered a high COVID-19 hospitalization area, which means the region is eligible to allow bars to swing their doors back open. But Cortez says the virus is still active in the area and he wants to make sure the Valley doesn’t get back into the overwhelming and deadly situation it was in this summer.
