Harris County D-A Sean Teare says the discovery of nearly three dozen bodies in Houston-area bayous this year doesn’t mean there’s a serial killer at large. Three bodies turned up in local bayous last week, bringing the total for the year to 34.

Social media speculation about a possible serial killer has gone viral. But Teare says many of the deaths reflect Houston’s problems with homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse. The medical examiner says the cause of nearly half the deaths is undetermined.
