The Department of Homeland Security is not apologizing for detaining a family that has been living in South Texas since 2023. The agency released a statement Monday calling Emma Guadalupe Cuellar Lopez and Luis Antonio Gamez Martinez illegal aliens who entered the U.S. near Brownsville in 2023.
The agency did not address reports that the Gamez-Cuellar family entered the U.S. as part of the CBP One program, which was ended by President Trump last year.
The statement also said 18-year-old Antonio Gamez-Cuellar couldn’t stay with his family because adult males without children are held at a separate facility. The agency invited the family to self-deport and try to come back into the U.S. the “legal way.”
