Drought conditions are slowly growing across South Texas. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows that nearly 37 percent of the region is classified as being in the highest category of drought.
Forty-two percent of the region is in the next-highest level of drought, while the rest is just below that in the category of severe drought. Areas most affected include all of Jim Hogg County, most of Zapata and Brooks counties and the northern part of Starr and Hidalgo counties.
The extremely dry conditions have led to warnings from the National Weather Service about the potential for wildfires throughout this week.
