A suspect who reportedly wanted to sacrifice a jaguar to protect his drug shipments will not be going to federal prison. Thirty-nine-year-old Hector Reyes of Mission was arrested during a federal investigation called Operation Ice River.

Investigators said Reyes recruited drivers for a Starr County-based drug smuggling operation that shipped cocaine from South Texas to New Jersey. Reyes reportedly conducted animal sacrifices to protect the drug shipments. He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and violating the Endangered Species Act in 2024. He was released from custody after being sentenced to time served on Tuesday.
