Edinburg City Councilman Resigns

An Edinburg city councilman is resigning after a relative got a job with the city fire department without his knowledge. The city announced Wednesday that Place Two Councilman Gilbert Enriquez has stepped down.

Enriquez said in a statement that his nephew applied for a job with the fire department without telling the fire chief that he was related to the councilman.

Edinburg has a policy that does not allow relatives of any council member to work for the city. Enriquez said he had no role in his nephew’s hiring, but felt it didn’t look good for him to remain on the council after the policy was violated.
