Stage 5 restrictions are now in effect for the holders of permits to pump from the Edwards Aquifer. It’s the first time Stage 5 has been reached since the founding of the Edwards Aquifer Authority in 1993.
The record low level happened during the severe drought of the mid-1950s, before the authority was founded.
Customers of the San Antonio Water System aren’t directly affected, but SAWS is the aquifer’s largest pumper, so the utility faces a reduction in water supply. Customers are asked continue Stage 3 restrictions.
