The father of a five-year-old child who was arrested by immigration officers in Minnesota and detained in Texas is rejecting the notion that he deserted his son.

Adrian Conejo Arias and his son were taken into custody after returning home from pre-school last month, and according to a DHS spokesperson, they were transported to the Dilley detention center together because no one else was available to care for the child.

Authorities accused Conejo Arias of “abandoning his child” after he attempted to flee the scene, but he told ABC News in an interview after their release that he “would never abandon” the young boy because he loves his son “too much.” Despite DHS claims, the father said he was simply attempting to find help.
