Two million federal dollars have been awarded to UT-Rio Grande Valley for the expansion of its School of Nursing in the city of Pharr. The grant will cover the construction of the facility.
Officials say the expansion of the school will address the chronic nursing shortage in the Valley, that was painfully exposed by the coronavirus pandemic, particularly last summer.
The $2 million is being awarded by the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Commerce Department. The federal dollars will be matched by $24 million in local investment. The nursing school expansion is projected to create 750 jobs.
