FEMA To Assist In Processing Unaccompanied Children At Southwestern Border

The Secretary of Homeland Security is directing FEMA to help receive, shelter, and transfer unaccompanied children to the southwestern border.

Alejandro Mayorkas announced Saturday the country is working to move these children from Customs and Border Protection to the Department of Health and Human Services so they can be placed with a family member or sponsor until their immigration case can be heard.

Mayorkas said a Border Patrol facility is no place for a child, and that the goal is to ensure the children are transferred to H-H-S as quickly as possible, “consistent with legal requirements and in the best interest of the children.”
