Rio Grande Valley residents are being warned about scams tied to federal disaster relief efforts in the area.

Officials warn that scammers may attempt to impersonate FEMA inspectors to obtain personal information or money from area residents.

Anyone who shows up without an appointment or demands money for a FEMA inspection could be a scammer. About five-thousand area residents have applied for FEMA aid following severe storms and flooding in late March.
