Five Rio Grande Valley schools are celebrating their selection as Texas Lone Star Ribbon Schools. The governor announced the award for the first time earlier this week.

The designation recognizes academic achievement and progress as part of a program that was previously called National Blue Ribbon Schools. Delia Gonzales Garcia Elementary and R.T. Barrera Elementary in the Roma school district were among the schools selected.

Also picked were Sharyland ISD’s Harry Shimotsu Elementary, PSJA ISD’s Thomas Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School, and La Joya ISD’s Diaz-Villarreal Elementary.
