Fugitive Mexican Mafia Gang Member Captured In Starr County

A fugitive gang member is back behind bars, being held in the Starr County jail, following a shootout with a DPS trooper east of Rio Grande City.

The trooper had tried to pull over an Infinity sedan late Friday night, but the driver, 41-year-old Mauricio Isaias Medina, sped off. He stopped and bolted from the car in Garciasville, shot at the trooper who shot back and chased Medina into a wooded area.

A DPS aircraft and a Border Patrol K-9 team were called in and Medina was apprehended. A member of the Mexican Mafia, Medina had been wanted in Travis County on a parole violation. He is now charged with attempted capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
